Bio
Stephen Seeley was born in Calgary, Canada, where he started his career as a passionate graphic designer. He lived and breathed design, working for many local and international brands. in 2005, he co-founded Studio Dialog, a motion graphics, animation and video production studio. Over the past two decades he has played many roles: creative director, photographer, director, cinematographer, teacher, animator, designer, and most recently - painter.
His passion for landscape painting builds on the creative skills he has been honing for 23 years and combines them with his love of the outdoors.
Stephen has spent much of his life exploring and photographing the landscape of Alberta and British Columbia. Many of these places now serve as inspiration for his work. If he’s not painting in his studio, you can probably find him outside exploring, biking, hiking, skiing or scrambling, usually with his camera.
Statement
Exploration is at the heart of my practice. Both in a physical sense, but also in terms of experimentation. I am continually developing new ways to create an image. I enjoy a challenge and coming up with new and innovative ways to solve problems, using my background in design and photography to help inform how I paint.
I gravitate towards places that have an otherworldly feeling. I paint these landscapes in oil (and occasionally acrylic) on wood panels I prepare and frame myself. Using flowing lines and painterly brushstrokes, I invite others to see these landscapes through my eyes. To transport them to atmospheric places I have discovered and to find beauty in it themselves.
My process begins with exploration. I love to find someplace new where I have never been before and just wander. Often, it’s scrambling to the top of a mountain, or riding a new trail. I rarely leave the house on an adventure without my camera packed in search of new inspiration.
I paint locations that I have visited on various adventures with friends, family and on solo missions. Painting these mountain summits, forests, lakes and trails reminds me of time spent wandering there. When viewing this work, I want others to feel a bit of that urge to go on their own adventure.
